Denim In the Work Place

Denim In the Work Place
One of my favourite suits has been a Zara denim suit which I bought a few years ago.  I loved that it was both smart and yet a little bit casual due to the denim material.  It was also extremely comfortable!  Smart enough for work but not the basic black or navy!  I used to wear it with a great floral shirt which I had bought from a boutique in Brussels.  Unfortunately for me, when I finished the outfit off with my favourite Miu Miu tan heels, one of my male colleagues helpfully suggested I looked like a hippy.  That definitely was not the look I was aiming for!  Lessons learnt from this experience: boot cut suits in denim paired with floral shirts and tan heels are not a winning “corporate” combination!
Imagine my delight when I saw this denim suit from Next.  A nipped in jacket which can be paired with a skirt and skinny trousers.  There is also a cute sleeveless dress in the same material.  I would recommend buying the whole lot if you are needing to update your work wardrobe as you can mix up all the components to achieve multiple looks, especially with what you already have in your wardrobe.  I would, however from my own personal experience, keep the accompanying pieces simple and crisp such as a white shirt or top and may be add a pop of colour with a skinny red belt and some great coloured heels and bag.  I would keep the colour mix relatively minimal hence my recommendation of red.  It is a classic combination and most people have most of these accompanying pieces already in their wardrobe.  I love the versatility of a suit which both has a skirt and trousers as you really can wear the same suit twice or even three times a week without feeling like you are wearing the same thing EVERY single day.  During those weeks when you feel unsure about what to wear, this is a great investment buy!  (Just like men who can wear the same suit but change the shirt and tie!)  The sleeveless dress also comes in a red which would be another option to buy too if you are feeling the need to buy a large haul.  Also the dresses with the jacket are a great option for the day to night look as the dresses are would be great for cocktails with the girls or for a date.  Just remember, keep the denim suit and the accompanying pieces simple and sleek to keep it modern and avoid receiving comments (like me!) that you look like a hippy!  (On a personal note, I still wore that combination to work in defiance as it simply made me feel good and happy – which is really what clothes should be about!)
